Classifications Of Search Engines

With knowledge of the search engine process and how users utilize these search engines, it will be easy to concentrate on more specific information about these engines. Not all search engines work the same way and the different kinds of search engines are best discussed below.

Search engines are classified into three different forms (in general terms) primary, secondary, and targeted.

1. Primary Search Engines – these are the major search engines online (Google, Yahoo and MSN). When you think of search engines, these three are what mostly come into mind instantly. Primary search engines generate the most volume of traffic to a website. Although these search engines vary at the way they work, they all have the same objective. Google largely dominates all of the search engines maybe because it gives better search engine results.

2. Secondary Search Engines – are focused primarily on smallest and more specific market. They don’t generate as much traffic but should not be overlooked as well. They can be helpful for regional and more slightly focused searches. Most common of the secondary search engines include Lycos, Ask.com, Miva, etc. Secondary search engines should also be included as part of your SEO campaign or plan.

3. Targeted Search Engines – are most often called topical search engines and are more prcise of all the search engines. They are concentrated mainly for a specific topic like medicine, branches of science, sports, travel or any other topic. CitySearch, Yahoo! Travel, MusicSearch are examples of targeted search engines. The method in which they measure a page rank also differs from other search engines. If you are to consider using targeted search engines for your SEO campaign, look for a targeted search engine that is specific or relevant to your topic.

Getting an understanding of the search engines can help you see where you need to focus your SEO efforts at any given time. Once you have started SEO for your site, constantly monitor and update your SEO strategies and activities to achieve and meet your desired goals and results.

The wealth of search engine users is fertile ground for SEO targeting. And the better you understand how and why users use search engines, and exactly how search engines work, the easier it will be to achieve the SEO you are pursuing.
